Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged a man for allegedly possessing approximately a terabyte of child abuse material yesterday as part of National Child Protection Week under Strike Force Glandore.
Strike Force Glandore was established by State Crime Command's Sex Crimes Squad Child Internet Exploitation Unit (CIEU) to investigate the online distribution, supply and access of child abuse material.
As part of investigations, strike force detectives – with assistance from Australian Federal Police officers – executed a search warrant at an Epping home yesterday (Thursday 5 September 2024).
During the search, police allegedly located about a terabyte of pornographic material – the majority of which was child abuse material – on a 20-year-old man's phone.
He was arrested and taken to Gladesville Police Station where he was charged with two counts of use carriage service to access child abuse material.
The man was refused bail to appear before Burwood Local Court yesterday.
Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty, Commander of Sex Crimes Squad, said that detectives will continue to hunt those individuals who share this kind of material online.
"I want the public to understand how much child abuse material detectives are locating during these investigations. One terabyte of data is the equivalent to 250,000 photos or 500 hours of HD video.
"These are images of children, some of the most vulnerable people in our community, being sexually abused," Det Supt Jayne Doherty said.
"My detectives will continue to diligently sift through these images to identify and rescue the children in these images and videos and stop the abuse.
"Since last National Child Protection Week the State Crime Command's Child Exploitation Unit's Victim ID team have identified 17 children who have been sexually abused to produce child abuse material," Det Supt Jayne Doherty said.
