Man Charged for Traffic, Drug, Weapon Offenses in Newcastle

A man will face court today charged over alleged traffic, drug, and weapons offences in the Newcastle area.

About 2pm yesterday (Tuesday 7 January 2025), police attached to Newcastle City Police District attempted to stop a vehicle, allegedly stolen from a Merewether address, on Union Street, The Junction.

When the driver of the vehicle allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

The vehicle came to a stop on Henry Street, Merewether, where the driver allegedly ran from the vehicle.

A short time later, a 42-year-old man was arrested by attending officers following a foot pursuit.

During a search of the man, police allegedly located and seized an amount of methamphetamine.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, police pursuit - not stop - drive recklessly, and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.

He was also charged over earlier alleged drug supply and weapons offences:

  • two counts of possess prohibited drug,
  • supply prohibited drug (greater than indictable and less than commercial),
  • possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, and
  • use prohibited weapon contrary to prohibition order.

He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court today (Wednesday 8 January 2025).
