Man Charged in $4.2M Illegal Cigarette Bust

A man will face court today (Wednesday 21 August 2024) charged with allegedly dealing with proceeds of crime after more than $4.2 million worth of illegal cigarettes was seized at Wetherill Park in Wetherill Park.

About 1.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 20 August 2024), Proactive Crime Team attached to Fairfield City Police Area Command attended a storage facility on Cowpasture Place, Wetherill Park.

While speaking with a 33-year-old man, police noticed several boxes of cigarettes in a Toyota Hiace van.

During a search of the vehicle, officers allegedly located and seized a number of boxes allegedly containing illegally imported cigarettes

The man's storage unit was also searched, with a large number of allegedly illegal cigarettes seized.

Police will allege in court they seized 137,880 cigarette cartons, 90kgs of loose rolling tobacco, and 323 packets of vital honey with an estimated street value is approximately of $4.2 million.

The man was taken to Fairfield Police Station where he was charged with one count of knowingly deal with proceeds of crime.

He was bail refused to appear before Fairfield Local Court today (Wednesday 21 August 2024).
