Man Charged in Annandale Fire

A man will face court over a suspicious fire which damaged the police building in September this year.

Detectives from Leichhardt Police Area Command established Strike Force Tosens to investigate a fire about 4am on Monday (16 September 2024), which damaged the old Annandale Police Station.

It is alleged the front door, side door and two glass panels were damaged as a result of the fire.

As a part of investigation, police executed a search warrant on Thursday (21 November 2024), at an address on Parkway Avenue, Cooks Hill, where they seized items including CDs and a laptop computer.

Following further inquiries, Strike Force detectives and officers from State Crime Command's Arson Squad arrested a 49-year-old man about 9am yesterday (Thursday 12 December 2024), at a correctional facility in Silverwater.

He has been charged with 12 offences,

  • Damage property by fire/explosive (five counts)
  • Break and enter house (two counts)
  • Possess child abuse material
  • Goods suspected stolen in/on premises (three counts), and
  • Possess identity info to commit etc indictable offence.

He was refused bail and appeared at Downing Centre Local Court yesterday (Thursday 12 December 2024).
