Man Charged in Newcastle Armed Robberies, Home Invasion

A man will face Court after being charged with a string of offences in the Newcastle area over the weekend.

In the first reported incident, about 8.40am on Saturday 5 October 2024, a 30-year-old man entered his parked car on Wentworth Street, Wallsend, when he approached by a man allegedly armed with a small axe. The man demanded money from the car owner. The car owner was forced to drive the car around the block before the armed man ran off. The victim then reported the incident to officers at Waratah Police Station.

In a second incident, about 6am yesterday (Sunday 6 October 2024), police were called to a home on Bull Street, Cooks Hill, following reports of a break and enter.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District arrived and were told an unknown man had broken into the home before leaving.

No one was injured during the incident; however, several personal items were stolen from the home.

Police established a crime scene and commenced an investigation.

In a third incident, about 12.15pm on Sunday 6 October 2024, a 66-year-old man entered his parked car in Parry Street, Cooks Hill, when a man allegedly armed with a sharp instrument entered the car via the passenger side door and demanded property. Two other men also assaulted the car owner as he fought off the armed man. Officers from Newcastle City Police District were contacted and commenced an investigation into the incident.

Following an investigation by detectives from Newcastle City Police District, about 8.30pm last night (Sunday 6 October 2024), police located a 21-year-old man walking along Darby Street, cooks Hill. As police were to speak with the man, he ran off on foot. As police went to arrest him, the man allegedly used a steel bar towards police to prevent his arrest. Officers used OC spray to effect the arrest.

After being decontaminated, the man was taken to Newcastle City Police Station, where he was charged with nine offences – robbery whilst armed with offensive weapon (two counts), aggravated break and enter and commit serious indicatable offence whilst armed, assault, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, assault police officer in execution of duty (two counts) and hinder police (two counts)

The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court later today (Monday 7 October 2024).
