Man Charged in Stemler Murder, Home Invasion

State Crime Command detectives today travelled to the Mid North Coast to charge a man over the shooting murder of Ferenc Stemler and a shooting at a home invasion in Lidcombe in 2023.

About 2am on Thursday 27 July 2023, emergency services were called to Broughton Street in Canterbury, after reports of a shooting.

On arrival, officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command found a man with gunshots wounds. He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, died at the scene.

The man was identified as 28-year-old Ferenc 'David' Stemler.

Local police, with assistance from State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, commenced inquiries before the matter was taken carriage of by Task Force Magnus under Strike Force Murrell.

Three people have been previously charged and remain before the courts.

Following further extensive inquiries, about 1.25pm today (Wednesday 29 January 2025), Homicide Squad detectives arrested a 27-year-old man at Kempsey Police Station, where he was charged with murder.

At the same time, the man was also charged by Robbery & Serious Crime Squad detectives for his alleged role in a shooting and home invasion in Lidcombe in July 2023, which was investigated under Strike Force Lovelock.

During the aggravated home invasion, a number of shots were allegedly fired, and a 31-year-old man allegedly injured.

Three men have previously been charged over the incident and remain before the courts.

The 27-year-old man was charged with fire firearm at dwelling and special aggravated break and enter & commit serious indictable offence.

He was refused bail to appear in Kempsey Local Court tomorrow (Thursday 30 January 2025).

Police will allege in court the man was one of the three men in the car at the time of the murder of Ferenc Stemler.

Investigations continue.
