Man charged over series of historical robberies across Sydney, NSW

Detectives have charged a man over a series of alleged historical robberies at banking institutions across Sydney 40 years ago, NSW Police say.

The State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad commenced a renewed investigation, under Strike Force Pats, into a series of robberies at banking institutions across Sydney’s CBD and Lower North Shore in the 1970s.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force investigators arrested a 69-year-old man at a unit complex in Edgecliff about 7am today (Thursday 20 December 2018).

The man was taken to Waverley Police Station, where he was charged with eight counts of robbery.

Police will allege in court that the man handed a threatening note to bank tellers before stealing cash at eight different banking organisations across Sydney’s CBD and Chatswood between 1977 and 1978.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Waverley Local Court today (Thursday 20 December 2018).

Robbery and Serious Crime Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Daniel Doherty, said today’s arrest had been the culmination of a thorough investigation and advancements in technology.

"Our detectives have re-examined these matters and have utilised all the new technologies and resources at our disposal to put a man before the courts," Det Supt Doherty said.

"The message today is clear – it doesn’t matter if it takes 40 years, 40 days or 40 minutes, we will track you down and you will have to answer for your crimes."

As investigations under Strike Force Pats continue, anyone with information is urged to come forward.

Anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Pats investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
