A man has been charged after multiple vehicles were allegedly deliberately rammed as they drove south along the Hume Highway yesterday.
On Saturday (3 August 2024), police commenced inquiries following reports a silver Toyota Camry sedan was stolen from an address on Riverside Crescent, Marrickville.
About 6pm police received a number of reports that a silver Toyota Camry sedan was being driven erratically and collided with other vehicles, including a coach with a number of passengers, as it was driven southbound on the Hume Highway.
Police were told the sedan left the scene; and there were no reports injuries.
A short time later, officers attached to The Hume Police District responded immediately after they received further reports of the Camry driving erratically and allegedly deliberately colliding with two vehicles in separate incidents on the Hume Highway, between Alpine and Berrima.
About 6.30pm police were called to Hume Highway, Sutton Forest, following reports of a two-vehicle crash where it was reported the Camry collided with a Tesla. Police were told the driver of Tesla – a 40-year-old man – and his passengers – a 46-year-old woman and two girls aged 11 and 12 – were allegedly assaulted by the male driver of the sedan before he left the scene.
NSW Ambulance paramedics were called and treated the driver and passengers of the Tesla for facial injuries before they were taken to Bowral Hospital for further treatment.
About 6.40pm, police responded to another incident where the sedan crashed with a fifth vehicle on the Hume Highway, near Paddys River, and the vehicle came to a stop.
An off-duty officer was nearby and stopped at the scene, before a foot pursuit ensued when the 33-year-old man assaulted the off-duty officer a number of times.
The man was arrested a short time later and taken to Southern Highlands Police Station before being taken to Campbelltown Hospital under police guard.
He was later discharged and taken to Campbelltown Police Station where he was charged with 12 offences including common assault, destroy or damage property, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, aggravated assault with intent to rob, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, negligent driving, refused breath test, refuse breath analysis and assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm.
He was refused bail and will appear at Campbelltown Local Court tomorrow (Monday 5 August 2024).
The man's driver's licence was also suspended.
