A couple have as been charged with numerous offences after being stopped by police at Taree earlier today.
About 12.30pm on Friday 16 August 2024, officers from Manning/Great Lakes Police District stopped the man and woman on Marjorie Street, Taree.
Inquiries by police indicated the man was allegedly in breach of an apprehended violence order and was also wanted for breaching bail.
Despite attempts by the woman to hinder police efforts to effect an arrest, the man, aged 40, was arrested.
During a search of the man, police allegedly located a loaded .22 calibre handgun in his jacket pocket. Police also located 50 rounds of ammunition and a quantity of prohibited drugs which police will allege in Court to be heroin, cannabis and other prescription drugs.
The woman was also searched; police allegedly found a small quantity of prohibited drug which police will allege in Court to be methylamphetamine.
The pair were taken to Taree Police Station where the man was charged with 11 offences: possess unregistered unauthorised pistol in public place, possess unauthorised pistol, possess ammunition without holding a licence, not keep firearm safely, carry cutting weapon upon apprehension, possess prohibited drug (four counts), possess prescribed restricted substance and breach AVO.
The 29-year-old woman was charged hindering police and possess prohibited drug.
They were both refused bail to appear before Port Macquarie Local Court tomorrow (Saturday 17 August 2024).
