A man will face court today, one of two people charged following a pursuit in the Wollongong area yesterday.
About 1.30pm (Saturday 30 September 2023), officers attached to Lake Illawarra Traffic and Highway Patrol attempted to stop a Mazda utility – reportedly stolen from a Jamberoo home during a break-in – on the Princes Highway, Dunmore; however, the Mazda sped off and a pursuit was initiated.
The Mazda was monitored by PolAir as it travelled north before being seen turning into Woodrow Place, at Figtree. Upon turning a around, the Mazda collided with a police vehicle before continuing south on the highway, where it has collided with a BMW on Cordeaux Road.
The occupants of the police vehicle and BMW were not injured.
Shortly after, the Mazda lost control and crashed on Harry Graham Drive, Mount Kembla, and the driver, a 20-year-old man was arrested.
A woman and child in the vehicle were uninjured.
During a search of the vehicle, officers seized three firearms. They will be forensically examined.
The man was taken to Wollongong Hospital, under police guard for treatment.
The 23-year-old woman was arrested after later attending Wollongong Police station about 6pm. She was charged with be carried in conveyance taken w/o consent of owner and granted conditional bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 31 October 2023.
The man was escorted to Wollongong Police Station about 7.20pm and charged with possess unregistered firearm-not pistol/prohibited firearm, two counts of possess unregistered firearm - pistol, three counts of police pursuit - not stop - drive recklessly, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, two counts of never licensed person drive vehicle on road, break and Enter house etc steal, use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, motor vehicle exceed speed more than 45 km/h, take & drive conveyance w/o consent of owner, drive with child not restrained, unrestrained passenger, and other traffic offences.
The Nowra man was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Sunday 1 October 2023).
