Man Charged With Murder After Tamworth Police Raid

A man will face court today charged with murder following a stand-off with police in Tamworth this weekend.

Emergency services were called to a home unit on Goonoo Goonoo Road, Tamworth, about 4.30pm Saturday (22 February 2025), following reports of a concern for welfare.

On arrival, officers attached to Oxley Police District found a 47-year-old man suffering critical head injuries, with another man nearby allegedly armed with a knife.

The armed man locked himself in a bedroom before climbing onto the unit block roof.

The injured man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Tamworth Base Hospital where he later died.

Police secured a perimeter at the unit block with extra resources – including officers from Tactical Operations Regional Support (TORS) and police negotiators – called to the scene.

During the operation, officers were speaking with the 55-year-old man when he fell from the roof.

He was treated by paramedics for stab wounds to his chest before being taken to Tamworth Base Hospital, under police guard in a serious but stable condition.

The man was later transferred to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

Initial inquiries allege the two men were known to each other.

A crime scene was established with detectives attached to Oxley Police District establishing Strike Force Elsner to investigate the incident, assisted by State Crime Command's Homicide Squad.

Following inquiries, the 55-year-old man was charged with murder.

He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court today (Monday 24 February 2025).
