A man has been charged with a street racing offence after a crash in Rydalmere at the weekend.
Emergency services had been called to Pike Street about 10.30am Sunday (8 September 2024), after a car hit a power pole and spilt in half.
The driver, a 22-year-old man, was trapped for a short time before being released by Fire and Rescue NSW.
He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
Officers attached to Ryde Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Following inquiries, by the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit, a 56-year-old man was arrested about 5.20pm Monday (9 September 2024), at Parramatta Police Station.
The man, from Northmead, has been charged with four offences, including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive speed dangerous, fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm, organise, promote etc race between vehicles, and dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous.
He's been granted strict conditional bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday 2 October 2024. His driver's licence has been suspended.
