Man Charged with Traffic, Firearm Offences in Port Stephens

A man has been charged following an investigation into traffic and firearm offences following an incident last month.

About 8am on Thursday 13 February 2024, police attempted to stop a blue Ford Falcon on The Bucketts Way at Booral.

Inquiries revealed the vehicle was stolen from Queensland and the driver had allegedly failed to pay for fuel at a service station in Walcha earlier that day.

When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit continued to a rest stop at Twelve Mile Creek where the driver exited the vehicle and entered bushland on foot.

Officers searched for the man with the assistance of the Dog Unit and PolAir; however, he was not located.

A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly revealed a firearm.

Following extensive inquiries by detectives, a 40-year-old man was arrested at Fassifern Train Station about 2.40pm on Thursday 27 February 2025.

He was taken to Toronto Police Station where he was charged with seven offences:

  • Police pursuit - not stop - drive at speed (two counts),
  • Dishonestly obtain property by deception,
  • Use, supply, acquire, possess stolen firearm or part,
  • Possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority,
  • Possess unauthorised firearm, and
  • Not keep firearm safely.

He was refused bail to appear before Toronto Local Court on Friday 28 February 2025, where he was formally refused bail to appear before Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 10 March 2025.
