A man has been extradited and charged after allegedly stealing a police vehicle near the ACT border.
Officers from Monaro Police District were called to Malbon Street, Bungendore, about 2.20am on Friday 7 March 2025, following reports of a break and enter at a business.
Upon arrival, police attended and found a man inside the premises.
Officers attempted to arrest the man and a struggle ensued, during which the man allegedly punched an officer in the head. The officer discharged a Taser; however, it was ineffective.
The man allegedly got into a nearby marked police vehicle and allegedly drove towards the two constables.
One of the constables discharged their firearm, hitting the passenger door of the police car.
The man allegedly drove the police vehicle towards the ACT.
Following inquiries, the vehicle was recovered by ACT Police at the intersection of Canberra Avenue and Geelong Street, Fyshwick. No property was missing from the vehicle.
About 9.40am yesterday (Sunday 9 March 2025), ACT Police officers arrested a 24-year-old man inside a car parked on Rosenthal Street, Campbell.
Today (Monday 10 March 2025), the man appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court where an application for extradition was granted.
About 12.30pm, the man was taken by officers attached to Monaro Police District to Queanbeyan Police Station.
He has been charged with 13 offences - enter vehicle or boat without consent of owner/occupier, aggravated break and enter with intent- knowing person there, break and enter dwelling-house etc with intent (steal), take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, larceny, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, two counts of hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, steal motor vehicle, use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, and possess prohibited drug.
He appeared via AVL in Goulburn Local Court today, where he was formally refused bail to appear at Queanbeyan Local Court on Monday 5 May 2025.
