A critical incident investigation is underway after a man was shot by police in Sydney's south-west.
About 11pm (Saturday 27 July 2024), emergency services were called to Bird Walton Avenue, Middleton Grange, following reports a man was allegedly armed with a knife.
On arrival, officers attached to the South-West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad were allegedly confronted and threatened by a 34-year-old man with a knife.
Initial information indicates that a 33-year-old male officer was struck with the knife and was protected by his operational vest.
A taser was used and proved ineffective and the male was shot by police.
The police officer was not physically injured.
The officers conducted CPR until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics, who worked on the man; however, he could not be revived.
A critical incident team from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation is also subject to an independent review.
