Mandatory SMS Register Positive Step To Combat Scams

The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) has welcomed the Federal Government's announcement about the implementation of a mandatory SMS Sender ID Register.

The TIO supports the introduction of a mandatory registration model for SMS senders to ensure consumers are protected from scammers impersonating legitimate brands.

Ms Gebert stated that directing the scheme to be mandatory rather than voluntary will provide better protection for consumers.

"A voluntary requirement may create inconsistency and confusion for consumers, as they may not be aware which businesses and entities have registered their sender ID and which have not.

Cynthia Gebert says that the Government's announcement will assist Australians in navigating the risks of increasingly complex scams.

"We know how damaging these SMS scams can be. Even for consumers who are aware of the risks, it can still be incredibly difficult to determine what's legitimate and what isn't", Ms Gebert said.
