Tasmania is investing $3.3 million into our cyber security defences to help keep people and their information safer, as our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future sees record investment in cyber security delivered for the state.
Speaking at an event with ICT industry leaders in Launceston, Minister for Science and Technology, Madeleine Ogilvie, said a broad community effort is the only appropriate response to this vital issue.
"This Cyber Security Awareness Month we are highlighting how everyone can stay safer online," said Minister Ogilvie.
"Cyber security is such an important issue for all Tasmanians. We want to help keep everyone safe from threats, and to raise community awareness.
"The 2024-25 Budget is progressing our $3.3 million Cyber Hubs Initiative to strengthen our State cyber defences through a new whole-of-government shared operating model.
"Our Cyber Hubs will protect Tasmanian government data and systems as well as providing a framework for continuous improvement in our cyber defences.
"TasICT also received $30,000 to help deliver its cyber security conference, workforce development and student engagement.
"This will support TasICT to hold its third annual cyber conference so that business and industry can learn about and adopt best-practice cyber security measures.
"Protecting yourself online doesn't have to be hard – there are many things that you can do for yourself, your family, friends, and colleagues to improve cyber safety.
"Simple steps such as enabling multi factor authentication, keeping software up to date, using strong and unique passphrases and learning to recognise and report phishing and scams can all make a difference."
