  • Tournament set to generate more than $9 million for Queensland economy.
  • These matches further cement Queensland as a global hub for major sporting events.

The Matildas will waltz back to the Gold Coast to take part in one of six matches to be played in the city during the AFC Women's Asian Cup Australia 2026.

Asia's top 12 teams will compete for the Cup between 1 to 21 March 2026, with eight remaining qualifying spots to be decided later this year, before the final draw is announced and tickets go on sale.

The six matches put Queensland front-and-centre on the international stage, with the tournament expected to generate more than $9 million for the state's economy.

A double-header to determine the 5th and 6th teams from Asia to qualify for the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027 will also take place at the 27,000-seat Robina venue, on Thursday 19 March.

Minister for Sport Tim Mander said it will be a treat for football fans to see the Matildas return to the Gold Coast.

"We are proud that the Gold Coast is one of three Australian host cities for the tournament," Minister Mander said.

"We hope it will inspire young Queenslanders to get active and chase their own dreams as we build momentum towards Brisbane 2032."

Minister for Tourism Andrew Powell said these matches will further cement Queensland as a global hub for major sporting events.

"This tournament is yet another global event that puts Queensland on the world stage and encourages more visitors and sporting teams to come and experience our venues, beaches and attractions," Minister Powell said.

"Attracting events of this magnitude to Queensland cities aligns perfectly with this government's 20-year tourism plan, which has a strong focus on creating an integrated state-wide events calendar."

Gold Coast Acting Mayor Donna Gates said the city is ready to welcome football fans from around the world.

"The Gold Coast is already loved by travellers from across Asia and we can't wait to give fans a memorable time both inside the stadium and across our beachside city," said Councillor Gates.

"From the spectacular hinterland to the beautiful beaches, the city's natural green and gold will be cheering on the Matildas in their quest for Cup glory."

Football Australia CEO James Johnson said the release of the match schedule marks an exciting milestone.

"With the Matildas set to play in all three host cities, fans across the country will have the opportunity to witness world-class football as we showcase the very best of women's football in Asia," Mr Johnson said.

"This tournament is not only about the competition on the pitch, it is about uniting communities, celebrating our diversity and building a lasting legacy for the growth of the women's game in Australia.

"We look forward to welcoming Asia's finest teams and creating an unforgettable experience for players, fans and football lovers alike."

AFC Women's Asian Cup Australia 2026 Local Organising Committee Chief Operating Officer Sarah Walsh said releasing the match schedule brings the tournament to life and sets the countdown well and truly in motion.

"We are excited to deliver a world-class tournament that showcases the best of Asian women's football right here in Australia," Ms Walsh said.

"We want everyone to get involved and feel part of the women's football celebration and multicultural festival that will be the Women's Asian Cup 2026."
