Mayor Cr Liesbeth Long - Maryborough Advertiser

As Councillor and indeed as Mayor, there are a lot of daily emails, text messages and phone calls.

One particular text message late last week, however, will stay etched in my memory for a long time.

It was from our local member for Ripon, Martha Haylett, to let me know that Deledio Recreation Reserve's new pavilion upgrade project was successful in obtaining $1 million worth of State funding in the first round of the Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund.

This particular project has been high on my list of priorities and advocacy for the whole four years I've been the Flynn Ward Councillor.

The current club rooms are beyond usability and have been for years with non-existent female friendly nor accessible facilities whatsoever. The local community has worked tirelessly for over two decades to get new clubrooms built and now their hard work has finally paid off.

This builds on the recent completion of the Reserve's new netball and multi-use sports courts earlier this year.

However, the football club rooms will not be just another 'sporting facility' - far from it. It'll be a multi-use facility that the whole township and surrounds can access and enjoy.

There is another live funding application for $2 million with the Federal Government at present - through the Play Our Way Fund program. If this has a successful outcome as well, then the dream of a brand new, modular-build pavilion may well be within reach.
