The Hills Shire Council has opened an online Book of Condolence to honour the life and legacy of His Holiness Pope Francis.

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne said the digital book would allow residents to express their sympathy and share their reflections in the comfort of their own homes.

"I extend my heartfelt sympathies to our Catholic community and invite you all to leave your name and a message in the Book of Condolence to honour His Holiness," Mayor Byrne said.

"The passing of Pope Francis will be deeply felt by many, and his legacy of compassion, humility, and service will continue to inspire generations to come."

The Book of Condolence will be available online until Wednesday, 21 May, after which it will be printed and bound as a lasting tribute.

"We've chosen to offer a digital book to make it easy for residents to participate and to grieve in their own time and space."

Pope Francis passed away at 88 years old, following a stroke and cardiac arrest during the early hours of Easter Monday. He made his final public appearance the day before, on Easter Sunday.

Affectionately known as the "People's Pope", Pope Francis consistently called for peace in times of conflict, actively reached out to other faiths, and championed the cause of social justice.

He was committed to fostering inclusivity, addressing historical challenges in the Church, and protecting the rights of migrants and the marginalised.
