Mayors across Australia endorse Uluru Statement From Heart

Inner West Council

Mayors from across Australia have today voted to endorse the Uluru Statement from the Heart. The motion from Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne, committing councils to a grass roots campaign to build awareness of the upcoming referendum, was passed by the National General Assembly of Local Government.

Mayor Byrne said, "the success of the referendum depends upon local government stepping up to meet this moment."

"Following the massive attendance at our Uluru Statement Forum at Marrickville Town Hall last Thursday, Mayors from across Australia have now committed to holding similar civic forums in their own local communities.

"We can all play a role in this historic change. Our councils will be supporting the Minister for Indigenous Australians, Linda Burney, and First Nations leaders to build grass roots momentum for voice, treaty and truth".
