Mayor's Message - Reflections On NAIDOC Week Festivities

Dear community

I am delighted to reflect on the vibrant celebrations of NAIDOC Week 2024 in our region, where we have once again come together to honour and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

This year, building on past successes, our NAIDOC Week festivities expanded with a diverse array of activities tailored for our community members and visitors. The national theme for 2024, "Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud", resonated deeply as we embraced its spirit throughout our celebrations.

Innovatively, we utilised our projectors to project NAIDOC images each evening at sundown, illuminating the walls outside Berninneit with the vibrant essence of this year's theme. Additionally, we proudly showcased the Bunurong Land Council's "Welcome to Country" video on our smart screens, ensuring all could appreciate and learn from the wisdom and traditions of our local traditional owners.

One of the highlights was the unforgettable performance by Kutcha Edwards at Berninneit, which captivated a sold-out audience. Furthermore, we hosted First Nations films at Berninneit and the Wonthaggi Union Community and Arts Centre, offering a diverse selection that was enjoyed by many.

The Artspace in Wonthaggi also marked a significant collaboration with the Bass Coast and South Gippsland Reconciliation Group through an inspiring exhibition, showcasing the remarkable talents of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. I encourage you to visit before August 11th to experience firsthand the powerful stories and heritage woven into each piece.

Looking ahead, I invite you to secure your tickets for The Sunshine Club, a highly anticipated theatrical production returning to Berninneit on July 25th due to popular demand. This lively Australian musical promises an evening of entertainment featuring a live five-piece band and over 20 original songs. Tickets are available at www.basscoastculturalvenues.com, and I encourage you to join us for this extraordinary event.

As we reflect on the success of NAIDOC Week 2024, I extend my gratitude to all who participated and contributed to these meaningful celebrations. Together, we continue to foster a community where all cultures are respected and celebrated, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.

Warm regards,

Mayor, Cr Clare Le Serve
