Having reviewed several restoration options to address the condition of McCrows Road Bridge in Westmere, Council have determined a total deck replacement is required.
The new deck will be constructed from high-strength, pre-cast concrete panels, which offer a solution balancing speed of construction, quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
The panels are designed with heavy duty reinforcement, offering excellent resistance to wear and tear and ultimately giving the deck a longer lifespan without the need for frequent repairs. The panels are manufactured in a controlled factory environment which allows for stricter quality control over the concrete mix, curing process, and panel dimensions.
Throughout installation of the panels, faster construction time will minimise the duration of road closures or detours, reducing inconvenience for road users.
"Pre-cast panels are a financially and socially responsible solution for the bridge's deck," says Ararat Rural City Council CEO, Dr Tim Harrison. "Reduced traffic delays and lower lifecycle costs translate to significant savings for the community. We're committed to getting farmers and other commuters back onto the bridge as soon as possible, while keeping safety and quality at the forefront of the project."
Council are now expediting the completion of the deck design, which will include a slight widening of the roadway to accommodate broader farming machinery.
