Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision in Maffra yesterday.
Emergency services were called Stratford-Maffra Road after two cars collided about 12.20pm.
Detectives believe the driver of a silver 2001 Toyota Corolla sedan had come to a stop on the road to turn into a driveway when the vehicle was hit from behind by a 2022 Mitsubishi Triton utility.
The driver of the sedan, a 37-year-old Maffra woman, was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she later died.
The driver of the utility, a 35-year-old Stratford man, was taken to hospital and has since been released pending further enquiries.
The investigation remains ongoing.
