Meat, Dairy Sales Volumes Rise in Dec 2024 Quarter

Meat and dairy product manufacturing sales volumes rose $253 million (3.1 percent) in the December 2024 quarter, compared with the September 2024 quarter, according to data released by Stats NZ today.

Sales volumes are adjusted for price and seasonal effects.

"Increased meat exports contributed to the rise in the volume of sales for the meat and dairy product manufacturing industry," economic indicators spokesperson Michelle Feyen said.

"This also coincided with higher meat and milk prices."

Total manufacturing sales rose $253 million (1.1 percent) in the December 2024 quarter. When excluding meat and dairy, manufacturing sales were flat (0.0 percent), compared with the September 2024 quarter.

Most industries see higher sales values in the December 2024 quarter

Sales rose in 12 of the 14 higher-level industries measured in the business financial data in the December 2024 quarter, when compared with the September 2024 quarter and after adjusting for seasonal effects. High-level industry data is not adjusted for price effects.

The biggest movements were in:

  • electricity, gas, water, and waste services - down 36 percent ($3.1 billion)
  • manufacturing - up 2.7 percent ($867 million)
  • construction - down 2.0 percent ($457 million).

"The decrease in sales for electricity, gas, water, and waste services was driven by wholesale electricity prices dropping back down after a peak in the previous quarter," Feyen said.
