Dr. E. Christopher Ellison was appointed the 103rd president of the American College of Surgeons in October. Ellison is the Robert M. Zollinger Professor of Surgery Emeritus at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. The ACS is a scientific and educational association of surgeons founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice.
HUND APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF OHIO STATE'S DAVIS HEART AND LUNG RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Thomas Hund, a professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The Ohio State University, has been named director of the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute (DHLRI). Hund holds a joint appointment in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and is the William D. and Jacquelyn L. Wells Chair at DHLRI. Hund has expertise in heart failure and arrhythmia with techniques ranging from mathematical modeling and computational biology, molecular and cell biology, imaging and animal physiology. He has more than 100 publications in leading journals and serves on multiple national editorial boards.
DODD REHABILITATION HOSPITAL TOPS NEWSWEEK'S RANKINGS FOR BEST IN OHIO
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital has been recognized as Ohio's Best Physical Rehabilitation Center 2022 by Newsweek. The survey noted that Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital's 60-bed inpatient facility has a standout program for spinal cord injury rehabilitation. Rankings are determined by Statista Inc., a global market research firm that ranks the country's top inpatient rehabilitation facilities based on quality of care, quality of service, quality of follow-up care and accommodation and amenities. Physical therapy plays an important role in patient care and experience. This year the magazine awarded 255 inpatient facilities, based on the results of an online survey of over 4,400 experts on physical rehabilitation.
PIOTROWSKI NAMED AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF NURSE ANESTHESIOLOGY FELLOW
Kathleen Piotrowski, chief certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) in the Department of Anesthesiology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, has been awarded a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology. Piotrowski was honored for demonstrating an exceptional level of expertise, service and commitment to transforming the nurse anesthesia profession. Piotrowski has been practicing as a CRNA for over 28 years and was the founding program director of the DNP-Nurse Anesthesia Program at the University of Arizona in 2015.
EMS STAR OF LIFE AWARDS HONOR OHIO STATE PHYSICIANS
The Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of Emergency Medical Services, the State Board of Emergency Medical, Fire and Transportation Services and the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians honored several physicians from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center during the EMS Star of Life Awards ceremony.
Dr. Ashley Larrimore was named EMS Medical Director of the Year. Larrimore, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, serves as medical director of the Whitehall Division of Fire, the Newark Division of Fire and EMS and MedFlight as well as assistant medical director of Clinton Township Fire. As medical director, she participated in the development of an EMS simulation and "Hands Off" program designed to improve patient care provided by EMS.
Dr. Ashish Panchal received the Frank Giampetro Distinguished EMS Educator award. Panchal, a professor of emergency medicine, was recognized for his service to the EMS community. He champions the education and training of EMS providers at the local, state and national levels. His work includes protocol development, EMS oversight and training that prepares the providers to handle all emergency scenarios.
Dr. Howard Werman received the Jack B. Liberator Lifetime Achievement Award. Werman, a professor emeritus of emergency medicine, was recognized for his lifelong commitment to the field of emergency medical care. Over his 40-year career, Werman collaborated with leaders in the field of EMS and contributed to numerous publications on the topics of resuscitation, patient transport, trauma and EMS practices.
SOUTHERLAND HONORED FOR WORK IN EMERGENCY MODELS OF CARE FOR OLDER ADULTS
The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and the AGS Health in Aging Foundation recognized Dr. Lauren Southerland, a clinical associate professor of emergency medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, for pioneering multidisciplinary geriatric models of care for older adults who have emergency healthcare needs. Southerland received the Jeffrey H. Silverstein Memorial Award for Emerging Investigators in the Surgical and Related Medical Specialties. Southerland's research has focused on quality improvement, implementation science and the incorporation of multidisciplinary geriatric care into the care of older adults with emergency healthcare needs.
MEDICAL CENTER EARNS TREE CAMPUS HEALTHCARE RECOGNITION
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center earned the Tree Campus Healthcare designation for 2021, the third consecutive year for this recognition. Tree Campus Healthcare is an Arbor Day Foundation program that recognizes health institutions for making a mission-aligned impact on community wellness through tree planting, education and community engagement. The medical center was one of only 31 hospitals in the country to be recognized for meeting five program standards: have an advisory committee, evidence of a facility tree care plan, community forestry project, a celebration event and dedicated annual expenditures toward a tree care plan or projects.
