Melbourne is set to experience extreme heat this coming Monday, with temperatures forecast to reach 40°C. Alarmingly, January 27 is historically the deadliest day for heat-related deaths each year. This year, the danger is heightened as many cool public spaces will be closed due to the public holiday and parks or outdoor spaces without shade may be extremely hot.
Emma Bacon, Executive Director of Sweltering Cities, is urging Victorians to take extra precautions and look out for vulnerable members of their community.
"Extreme heat is a silent killer," said Ms Bacon. "Heatwaves cause more deaths in Australia than any other natural disaster, and Monday's combination of high temperatures and reduced access to some cool spaces due to the public holiday puts some people at serious risk. We know that extreme heat days are occurring more often due to climate pollution."
Ms Bacon emphasised the importance of checking in on others, planning ahead, and adjusting outdoor activities to avoid the hottest times of the day.
"If you need to be outside, make sure to plan your activities for the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler," she said. "One of the most important things you can do during extreme heat is to check in with family, friends, and neighbours. A simple phone call or a text to check in could save a life."
Tips to stay safe in the heat
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
- Keep cool: Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, use fans or air conditioning, and close curtains or blinds.
- Plan outdoor activities wisely: Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours (projected to be around 4.30pm) and opt for cooler times like early morning or late evening.
- Look out for others: Check on vulnerable people, including older adults, children, and those with health conditions. Remember to make sure pets have access to cool spaces and water.
Sweltering Cities is also calling for urgent action from governments to address the risks posed by extreme heat through better infrastructure, planning, and public awareness campaigns.
