- International Firefighters' Day recognises fallen firefighters and thanks those who continue to serve the community
- Three names added to Western Australia's 2026 Firefighters Honour Roll
Firefighters who have died in the line of duty were today remembered at a Kings Park memorial service in honour of International Firefighters' Day.
The annual service recognises the bravery and sacrifice of Western Australia's fallen firefighters with 103 names enshrined on plaques at Memorial Grove.
Three new names have been added to this year's Honour Roll, including West River Bush Fire Service volunteer firefighter of 27 years Mark Mudie, who died saving a neighbouring farm in December 2025.
Tributes were also paid to Damian Buswell and Denis Jung who both died in 2022.
Damian Buswell joined the Career Fire and Rescue Service in 1988, serving 12 years at Welshpool Fire Station before relocating to the Great Southern where he worked both as a firefighter and area officer before retiring.
Denis Jung served as both a volunteer and aviation firefighter, originally joining the Carnarvon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service in 2001 and in 2011 joining the ranks of the Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service at Perth Airport.

As stated by Emergency Services Minister Paul Papalia:
"International Firefighters' Day is an opportunity to extend gratitude to career and volunteer firefighters for their courage, bravery and commitment to protecting our State.
"Firefighters dedicate their lives to protecting their communities but tragically some never make it home.
"Today we unite to honour the sacrifice and service of all past and present firefighters and to show support to the families of the fallen, particularly the newest additions to the Honour Roll."

"The loss of these selfless men and women has an enduring impact on their families, communities and the firefighting fraternity and we continue to remember their legacy and honour their memory.
"I ask every Western Australian to pause and reflect on the daily sacrifice of our career and volunteer firefighters; the fallen, retired and those who continue to serve our communities."
