Peabody's indication they are reconsidering their purchase of Anglo American steelmaking coal mines in Queensland creates unwelcome uncertainty for workers, the Mining and Energy Union said today.
However, safe reopening of the mine is the top priority, regardless of which multinational is at the helm.
Peabody's announcement they are 'reviewing all options' follows an ignition event at Moranbah North mine, where production has been suspended until the incident is investigated and the mine cleared for re-entry.
MEU Queensland President Mitch Hughes said the workforce were understandably concerned about their future.
"Our first priority is the safety of our members and workplaces. The cause of the incident must be thoroughly investigated and steps put in place to prevent its reoccurrence.
"Then, the mines must be reopened so that the workforce can get back to their jobs, and on with their lives.
"Peabody's statement today will create uncertainty at Moranbah North and other Anglo which are part of the sale.
"However, which multinational company takes the reins is ultimately of less concern than mineworkers' safety standards, working conditions, and future employment.
"Just as we are working constructively with Anglo, we will work with future owners of these mines to protect our members safety and interests."
