The wait is over for lovers of sunset strolls, swimming and sailing with vital repairs to Middle Brighton Pier now complete and public access restored in time for summer.
A ten-month work program has strengthened a 340-metre section of the pier's piles and cross heads and replaced deteriorating deck panels between the foreshore and marina entrance.
Funded through the Victorian Government's $24 million Piers and Jetties economic stimulus package, the repairs make the main section of pier safe for everyone to use again including pedestrians, swimmers, boaters and anglers.

Access to Middle Brighton Pier was restricted in May 2020 due to the risk of structural failure which posed public safety concerns. Repairs to the section that was originally constructed in 1977 are designed to prolong the life of the pier for another 10 to 15 years.
Part of the funded project includes early investigation into the longer-term options for the pier and breakwater. A project reference group comprising Parks Victoria, Bayside City Council and the Department of Transport has been established to advise on the project. Stakeholder input is being and will continue to be sought during the early investigation stage ahead of future detailed planning and broader community consultation stages being developed.

Access beyond the marina entry, including the breakwater and 1938 constructed section of pier, remains closed. Access to the outer low landing is restricted for safety reasons, however, the inner low landing is open. Parks Victoria will continue to monitor the condition of the closed sections to ensure public safety while the future of the precinct is considered.
In preparation for the peak boating season, maintenance dredging within the Harbour to remove a build-up of sand has also been completed.

Other upgrades to a number of piers in Port Phillip include St Kilda Pier, Queenscliff South Pier, Altona Pier, Portarlington Pier, and Rye Pier all of which are being repaired or rebuilt to make them better for the future.
