The Tasmanian Liberal Government is moving ahead with planned safety improvements to the Midland Highway's junction with Lake Leake Road in Campbell Town.
Minister for Infrastructure, Kerry Vincent, said a right turn lane would be built for vehicles turning into Lake Leake Road from the highway.
"This will improve safety for turning vehicles by providing a dedicated lane in which to wait for a break in oncoming traffic while allowing traffic continuing on the highway into Campbell Town to pass uninterrupted," he said.
"The upgrade is part of the latest round of the Australian Road Safety Program, jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments.
"Under this round, the Australian Government is providing $22 million and the Tasmanian Government $5.5 million for a number of safety improvements to roads around the State.
"We really appreciate the input from locals who have experienced difficulty with this intersection. We're working really hard to make Tasmanian roads safer and more efficient as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future."
Mr Vincent said site investigations at the Lake Leake Road junction would be carried out this month, followed by finalisation of the design and consultation with the local community later this year, with construction likely to start in spring 2025.
"Lake Leake Road is an important link between the Midland Highway and the east coast and the improvements will make the junction safer and improve traffic flow," Mr Vincent said.
