- The seventh Satellite Hospital is set to open this month, providing free healthcare to the Bribie Island community.
- The facility will open on 17 July 2024 and be open from 8am to 10pm seven days a week.
- Satellite Hospitals provide urgent care for non-life threatening illnesses and injuries, as well as critical outpatient services like kidney dialysis and mental health support.
- Cancer care, oral health and allied health services will be available at the Bribie Island Satellite Hospital in early 2025.
Premier Steven Miles has joined the Member for Pumicestone Ali King, Deputy Premier Cameron Dick and Health Minister Shannon Fentiman to officially tour and open the Bribie Island Satellite Hospital.
The facility will officially open on Wednesday, 17 July 2024.
It's the seventh Satellite Hospital delivered under the government's $376.9 million election commitment.
The Bribie Island Satellite Hospital Minor Injury and Illness Clinic will be open 8am to 10pm, seven days a week – offering treatment for non-life threatening illnesses and injuries.
That includes things like cuts, abrasions, sprains and broken bones.
In addition, the facility will include an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health hub, kidney dialysis services, a day medical treatment unit and outpatient mental health services.
A second stage of the Satellite Hospital will be open in early 2025, delivering cancer care services where patients can access chemotherapy, oral health services and a Healthy Aging Assessment and Rehabilitation Team to provide rehabilitation and care for the senior community.
The six open Satellite Hospitals have already treated more than 90,000 people through their Minor Injury and Illness Clinics, and a further 40,000 outpatient appointments.
The Satellite Hospital program has proven to alleviate pressure on local hospitals – we've seen a 12 per cent drop in less serious, non-emergency presentations at nearby hospitals since the Satellite Hospitals opened across South East Queensland [as of March quarter].
Locally, Satellite Hospitals at Caboolture and Kallangur have provided an easy alternate care pathway for patients on a range of health issues.
As stated by Premier of Queensland Steven Miles:
"Queenslanders want better healthcare, closer to home – and I am delivering.
"Here in Bribie Island, our seventh Satellite Hospital will open in just a few weeks and begin providing critical health care to the community.
"This will make the lives of locals so much easier, knowing that help for those scary but non-life-threatening situations is right here on the Island, while also alleviating pressure on busy emergency departments.
"More than 130,000 Queenslanders have visited a Satellite Hospital, all while there has been a 12 per cent reduction in presentations at local hospitals.
"This is proof that the Satellite Hospital model works, and I will keep doing what works to improve the health and wellbeing of Queenslanders right around the state."
As stated by Deputy Premier and Treasurer Cameron Dick:
"All Queenslanders deserve the opportunity to receive world class health care and our seven satellite hospitals deliver just that.
"David Crisafulli and the LNP have never supported our satellite hospitals and if he had his way, he would privatise them.
"The last thing Queenslanders need as they face mounting cost of living pressures is to be turned away from our seven satellite hospitals because they can't afford private healthcare."
As stated by Minister for Health, Mental Health and Ambulance Services Shannon Fentiman:
"We know our satellite hospitals are doing a fantastic job taking pressure off our emergency departments and providing more care for Queenslanders.
"Not only do they assist people with minor injuries such as sprains and cuts, but they also provide access to vital services such as dialysis and mental health support closer to home.
"And once cancer care services are available next year, the Bribie community will be able to access potentially life-saving chemotherapy treatment.
"This milestone furthers the Mile's Government's commitment to delivering world class healthcare for Queenslanders, no matter where they live."
