- Miles Government to build 27 modular homes for Mackay
- Mix of one and two-bedroom homes will be assembled at Fleetwood, Ausco Queensland factories
- Part of Miles Government's Homes for Queenslanders plan for one million more homes, including 53,500 social homes
Another 27 modular homes are set to hit the assembly line destined for Mackay as the Miles Government rolls out its Homes for Queenslanders plan.
The modular homes will be built in partnership with Fleetwood and Ausco at their Queensland factories and then delivered to four sites in the sugar city.
A mix of one and two-bedroom homes will be raised for better flood resilience and be aimed at families, individuals and older Queenslanders who want to downsize from their current place, freeing up larger social homes for families.
Earlier this year, the Miles Government announced it would order 600 more modular homes in partnership with Queensland builders and through the state's public building arm: QBuild.
Modular homes can help get people out of temporary accommodation quicker – where the government is currently investing millions of dollars – with on-site construction time can be three months compared to a year for many traditional builds.
Earlier this year, the LNP's Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett labelled modular homes built for families in Bundaberg as "too much".
The announcement is in stark contrast to the LNP who sent social housing backwards by hundreds of homes, cut workers from QBuild and who are now blocking legislation that will help thousands of families buy their own home.
As stated by Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:
"To build more homes, faster we're utilising our public builder QBuild and partnering with Queensland businesses to deliver hundreds of modular homes
"Modular homes are speeding up production and cutting timeframes – especially in regional parts of our state like Mackay – and they're critical to our Homes for Queenslanders plan to deliver one million more homes.
"Instead of being part of the solution, the LNP have taken every opportunity to attack modular homes and QBuild.
"The LNP say they're going to match our ambitious targets, but how can you believe them when they bag Queensland businesses and QBuild for building modular homes."
As stated by Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert:
"It's the Miles Government that has been doing what matters for Mackay – with $1,300 off power bills, 20 per cent off rego and building more homes.
"These new houses will benefit our community, unlocking supply and creating homes for local families and individuals. Importantly, they'll be built with flood resilience in mind and be located close to local schools, services and transport."
