Milestone Achieved for Key Upgrade at Busy Morley Site

  • Ertech awarded a contract to upgrade the Morley Drive and Bath Road intersection
  • Project involves construction of a roundabout to improve safety and efficiency
  • Construction is expected to start November 2024 and be completed by mid-2025

A $5.6 million road construction contract has been awarded to Ertech to construct a new dual-lane roundabout at the intersection of Morley Drive and Bath Road.

This important upgrade was an election commitment by the State Labor Government and will reduce congestion, improve safety and enhance traffic flow for over 25,000 commuters who use this section of the network daily.

In addition to the construction of a roundabout, street lighting will be upgraded and access for shared path users will also be improved. The existing shared path will be realigned and median refuges will be created on all three legs of the intersection.

The roundabout design was proposed for community consultation in early 2023, with the dual-lane design providing the greatest benefit in terms of improved traffic flow, safety and efficiency. When completed, the roundabout is predicted to reduce the number of crashes by more than 80 per cent.

Service relocations were completed earlier this year to prepare the site for construction, which will commence in November 2024, with completion expected by the middle of next year.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"We made a commitment to address the safety issues at this intersection and the awarding of this contract will ensure we deliver on that promise.

"We assessed a number of safety improvement measures for this site and determined that a dual-lane roundabout was the best option to improve safety and efficiency, without adding to congestion.

"We have listened to the community and are addressing their concerns for this busy intersection by delivering an upgrade that will address safety, congestion and traffic efficiencies."

As stated by Morley MLA Amber-Jade Sanderson:

"I'm committed to improving road safety in our local community, and this project will deliver major improvements for local residents.

"This intersection has been a concern for local residents and commuters for some time and I am pleased this milestone has been reached, with works to start later this year."
