Milestone Reached For New Aged Care Law

Department of Health

The Bill aims to:

  • improve the lives of older people accessing aged care services in their homes, community settings and residential aged care homes
  • encourage aged care providers to deliver high-quality care.

The proposed rights-based law:

  • addresses around 60 Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety recommendations
  • incorporates feedback from several public consultations we've led about the aged care reforms and the new law
  • responds to the Aged Care Taskforce about sustainably funding aged care into the future.

The Bill has been referred to the Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee for inquiry and report. During this time, the department will invite feedback on some of the rules that will sit under the new law.

The new Aged Care Act is expected to commence from 1 July 2025.
