Plans for the development of Domville Place in Millmerran into a 'civic place' providing a green space linkage to the town centre and opportunity for public gatherings can progress in a great win for the town.
The news comes after Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) resolved to approve the Millmerran Commerce and Progress Incorporated's (MCPI) proposal to develop and fund upgrades to Domville Place as outlined in the association's own Master Plan for the site.
Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald said the proposed upgrade to Domville Place could become a blueprint for how community groups work alongside Council to deliver projects and initiatives for their communities.
"I wholeheartedly commend the Millmerran Commerce and Progress Inc for bringing forward the Master Plan for an upgrade to Domville Place in Millmerran.
"This upgrade, which MCPI are proposing to fund themselves, is a fantastic example of TRC working hand-in-glove with a community group to deliver a project that will benefit their town.
"As a Council, we have committed to continual improvement and to be mindful of supporting our regional townships and communities to deliver projects and services that will make a difference and there's no doubt the upgrade of Domville Place will do just that and make a difference for Millmerran," Mayor McDonald said.
President of the Millmerran Commerce and Progress Inc Nikki Macqueen said she was delighted TRC had approved the group's proposal to progress the Master Plan for the site.
"MCPI expresses our gratitude to TRC for approving the Domville Place development and for their collaboration with our association to bring this project to life.
"The development will enrich the green space located at the corner of Gore Highway and Campbell Street, a key area for local businesses and the community library.
"The goal is to create a welcoming social hub where residents and visitors can relax, socialise, and enjoy the area as a tourist stopover.
"MCPI is committed to securing the necessary funding to realise this vision," Ms Macqueen said.
TRC Parks and Recreation Services portfolio Councillor Tim McMahon said the proposed upgrade of Domville Place would feature park elements not seen before in Millmerran.
"Domville Place is located in the heart of Millmerran and is an ideal space to develop a green space with gathering areas including permanent stage structures that can host concerts, community events and the like.
"The proposed Master Plan also includes pathways and the addition of trees and a covered picnic area which, once complete, will be wonderful elements for the community of Millmerran to enjoy for years to come," Cr McMahon said.
The resolution was made at this week's TRC Environment and Community Services Committee Meeting and requires final ratification at next week's September Ordinary Meeting of Council.
