Education Minister Grace Grace today congratulated Queensland's highest achieving Year 12 graduates from the class of 2021 — a group who are destined to be among our future surgeons, computer scientists, biomedical engineers and economists. "This year 47 graduates have received a prestigious Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) Achievement Award for exceptional academic achievements," Ms Grace said. "Two of these young people attended The Rockhampton Grammar School. "Cathleen Han and Margil Rajaji were recognised in the Distinguished Academic Achiever category and receive a certificate, trophy and $1000. "Cathleen's results included six straight A grades as well as complementary learning in speech and drama and music. She's now enrolled in a Bachelor of Medical Studies at Monash University and hopes to be a specialist doctor in the future. "Margil also got six straight As and wants to become a doctor providing care to vulnerable and disadvantaged communities on graduating at the University of Adelaide." Local Member for Rockhampton, Barry O'Rourke said he is very pleased to recognise the academic achievements of Cathleen and Margil. "Their dedication and commitment to study at the highest level of achievement are recognised in this award," Mr O'Rouke said. "I wish them every success as they enter their further studies in medicine, an area which our community will benefit greatly from." Margil Rajaji from The Rockhampton Grammar School said throughout his schooling journey, he has always had a deep interest and fascination in STEM subjects. "However, after undertaking work experience in the healthcare field and witnessing the dedication/resilience of the doctors, I was truly inspired to follow in their footsteps and persue medicine as a career after year 12," he said. "My two biggest tips for future students would be to stay consistent in your studies throughout the year and never compare yourself to others." Ms Grace said the awards reinforced that Queensland's new senior curriculum and assessment system enabled students from across the state to reach their full potential. "These award winners are the second cohort to graduate in the new QCE system and attended State, Catholic and Independent schools from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Ingham and Rockhampton," Ms Grace said. "I applaud the school principals and teachers responsible for the learning cultures and commitment to high standards that helped these young people to flourish. "This is also a proud day for the award winners' families. I'm sure they are an important part of their children's success." The QCE Achievement Awards are sponsored by Griffith University, James Cook University, The University of Queensland and University of Southern Queensland.
