The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, today issued the following statement:
"In our increasingly complex and interconnected world, Canada has a responsibility do our part to build a brighter future for everyone. From tackling climate change to strengthening health systems, international assistance is an investment that will create stronger communities for generations to come. When people have the tools to lift themselves out of poverty and strengthen local economies, it not only impacts individuals and their communities, it also benefits the global economy and our security and prosperity here at home.
"While many challenges remain, Canada's efforts have contributed to a dramatic decrease in extreme poverty, from nearly 38% of the global population in 1990 to approximately 10% today. Thanks to global health initiatives supported by Canada, more children around the world are growing up healthy and strong. Canada also supports local education, technical training, and employment programs, which have expanded economic opportunities for millions of people, especially women and girls. For example, since 2018, the Charlevoix Education Initiative has helped more than 4 million girls and women benefit from high-quality learning opportunities.
"This year, we're marking the 35th anniversary of International Development Week under the theme Building a Better World Together. We're celebrating our partnerships with Canadian civil society organizations and international NGOs working on the ground abroad, and thanking them for their efforts. Millions of Canadians contribute to international assistance initiatives by donating, working, and volunteering. In fact, over the last five years, Canada has funded over 5,300 volunteer placements in 42 countries, where volunteers work with local communities to advance women and girls' rights, fight climate change, encourage innovation, and advance diversity and inclusion.
"During International Development Week, I encourage everyone to connect with local Canadian organizations that are working towards the Sustainable Development Goals by helping to save countless lives and creating opportunities for people in lower-income countries. Visit our calendar to find community events, follow along on social media, and use the hashtag #IDW2025 to share your stories."
