The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, concluded a visit to Brazil, from July 22 to 25, 2024. In Rio de Janeiro, he took part in the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting (DMM) and a joint meeting of G20 development and finance ministers to establish the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.
At the G20, under the theme of Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet, the development ministers focused their discussions on how they must come together and take action to reduce inequalities between and within countries. Minister Hussen highlighted Canada's Feminist International Assistance Policy and stressed that putting gender equality at the heart of development efforts and focusing on the most vulnerable is the most effective way to achieve tangible and lasting results.
During the G20, Minister Hussen also held bilateral discussions with his counterparts to discuss ideas to accelerate progress toward the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, and to explore opportunities for stronger collaboration.
Minister Hussen attended a joint meeting of development and finance ministers, which was presided over by Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to discuss the new Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. The Alliance will be launched at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024. Minister Hussen outlined Canada's actions to fight hunger, malnutrition, and poverty and welcomed the creation of the Alliance.
Following the G20, Minister Hussen went to Salvador, in Brazil's state of Bahia, where he met with Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues and other state officials, the leaders and beneficiaries of a local organization addressing gender-based violence, and members of civil society organizations defending human rights, gender equity, and racial equity.
