The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will travel to Los Angeles, United States, from June 6 to 10, to join Prime Minister Trudeau at the ninth Summit of the Americas and have meetings with key stakeholders in Los Angeles.
Minister Joly will meet with her counterparts from the region, government officials, civil society representatives, and members of the private sector. She will discuss the biggest challenges and opportunities in the region today, including health, climate change, democracy, gender equality, irregular migration, and underscore Canada's engagement and priorities in the region. Minister Joly will further engage with key regional leaders to raise awareness of the importance of women's equal participation in leadership and decision-making as crucial to strengthening democracy, and advancing women's rights and gender equality.
While in Los Angeles, the Minister will virtually participate in RightsCon to discuss how Canada and the Freedom Online Coalition are advancing digital inclusion and upholding democracy and human rights in the digital age. She will also engage key experts and decision makers to strengthen relations with the U.S. and California, a key commercial partner for Canada and ally in combatting climate change.
On the margins of the Summit, Minister Joly will hold a North American Foreign Ministers' Trilateral Meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Mexico's Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, to discuss mutual efforts on global security issues as well as progress towards the next North American Leaders' Summit.
