Today, the Government of Canada marks Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, one of the most important celebrations on the Hindu calendar. It honours the victory of good over evil, symbolized by the victory of the god Rama over the demon Ravana. This celebration is also associated with goddesses Durga and Saraswati, female symbols of strength and knowledge.
Dussehra gives members of Hindu communities in Canada and elsewhere an opportunity to celebrate and gather with family and friends. They take part in religious rituals, pray and chant hymns in honour of Hindu deities. Colourful processions and theatrical recreations celebrate the acts of bravery of Rama and the victory of virtue.
Cultural diversity is a pillar of Canadian society. We are proud of what rich Hindu traditions bring to our country. Dussehra is an opportunity for Hindus to share their community's values, customs and festivities with their fellow citizens.
As Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, I am committed to the values of respect and mutual understanding. Intolerance and discrimination will never have a place in our country. May this celebration be an opportunity to strengthen ties between diverse communities and promote social unity.
Happy Dussehra everyone!
