Yesterday, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, met with Raquel Buenrostro, Mexico's Secretary of Economy, on the margins of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) third Free Trade Commission meeting, in Cancún, Mexico.
Minister Ng thanked Secretary Buenrostro for hosting the commission meeting and for her steadfast commitment to strengthening the close relationship between Canada and Mexico. The Minister reaffirmed Canada's willingness to continue working together on shared goals and overcoming key common issues together.
Minister Ng highlighted the important contributions of Canadian mining companies to the development of the Mexican economy, including to the critical-minerals supply chain, which is central to building the clean economy of the future.
The Minister recognized Mexico's commitment to sustainable mining and discussed the importance of implementing mining reforms that uphold rules-based trade, both under CUSMA and through a strong multilateral trading system with the WTO's agreements at its core.
Following the North American Leaders' Summit earlier this year, where Prime Minister Trudeau and President Lopez Obrador met, Minister Ng expressed gratitude towards continued efforts to find solutions and address the concerns of Canadian companies with Mexico's energy sector reforms-and said she looks forward to a full resolution of the issue.
Minister Ng said she looks forward to continuing to implement the Canada-Mexico Action Plan agreed to by leaders at the North American Leaders' Summit this past January.
