Today, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade, met with her ministerial provincial and territorial trade counterparts.
Minister Ng began the meeting by updating her colleagues on her work on important trade files with the United States, including the productive recent meetings in Washington, D.C., and Mexico City with her Canadian-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) counterparts and meetings with members of the U.S. Congress.
Minister Ng thanked the provincial and territorial ministers for their continued collaboration on matters related to trade between Canada and the United States, including the implementation of the new NAFTA, Buy America, softwood lumber, and the continued safe operation of Line 5. She emphasized how important their collective efforts have been, as part of Team Canada, in maintaining the resilience of deeply integrated cross-border supply chains during the COVID-19 pandemic and how critical it will continue to be to strengthen the economic partnership in recovery.
Minister Ng also outlined progress being made on the Roadmap for a Renewed U.S.-Canada Partnership, including with her counterpart Katherine Tai, the United States Trade Representative.
Minister Ng briefed her provincial and territorial colleagues on her ongoing conversations with Ambassador Tai, in which Minister Ng continues to champion Canada's role as a strong, reliable, and engaged cross-border partner across a range of sectors. She highlighted the ongoing collaboration between Canada and the United States to deliver an inclusive, sustainable recovery that creates jobs, generates long-term growth and enhances North American competitiveness through trade.
She emphasized that the best path forward to advocate for Canadian workers and companies is by collaborating as a unified Team Canada in support of a resilient economic recovery from the pandemic.
Minister Ng concluded the meeting with her provincial and territorial counterparts by reiterating that she is committed to continuing to work with them on the numerous and complex issues that are part of Canada's significant commercial relationship with the United States to benefit workers, businesses, and communities from coast to coast to coast.
