From: National Defence

Statement

March 21, 2019 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, and the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement to mark International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination:

"International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is an occasion to recognize the continued efforts to end racial discrimination. It is also a reminder that we all have the right to be treated fairly, respectfully, and with dignity. It is everyone's responsibility to treat others equitably.

"Racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and intolerance need to be addressed and eliminated. Still today, in Canada and around the world, injustices and struggles with racism take place on a daily basis. We must stand up whenever we see an act of bigotry or racism, no matter how small it may seem.

"Diversity, equality, and tolerance are values that form the foundation of what it means to be Canadian. Our country is home to a wide array of cultures and people of varying backgrounds and experiences.

"Our Veterans and members of our Canadian Armed Forces reflect this diversity, have bravely served our country, and risked their lives to defend the principles of freedom and equality.

"On this important day, we reaffirm our commitment to speak up against racial discrimination and to honour those who serve to uphold our values of inclusiveness, acceptance, and equality, and strive for the elimination of racial discrimination around the globe."
