Four high-level meetings with G20 state ministers from July 22 to 26 will advance discussions and forge consensus on key topics for the November Heads of State Summit.
Working Groups on Development and Employment and Task Forces on Finance and on Hunger and Poverty will kick off the G20 ministerial meetings. High-level government representatives will review discussions and agreements made since December 2023.
The week starting today, Monday (22), and ending on Friday (26), is crucial for G20 discussions. During this period, the Hunger and Poverty Task Force is expected to endorse the foundational documents of the Global Alliance, paving the way for countries to join the initiative. Brasil's President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will attend the event, underscoring the commitment to establishing the Alliance during Brasil's G20 presidency.
The week's extensive agenda features the release of critical reports, including "The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI)" by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Additional events include "States of the Future" and "COP28-G20 Brasil Finance Track: Making Sustainable Finance Available, Accessible, and Affordable." Notable figures such as former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen will also participate. Engagement groups and civil society organizations will hold meetings with track representatives.
The Employment Working Group (EWG) will convene in Fortaleza, Ceará, from July 23 to 26. It will be among the first groups within the Sherpa and Finance tracks to conclude its discussions and finalize the document of recommendations for the G20 Heads of State and Government. During the same week, two G20 Social engagement groups ̶ Labour 20 (L20) and Business 20 (B20) ̶ will also hold meetings. The L20 summit, with the theme "A Just World and a Sustainable Planet through a New Social Contract," will occur on July 23 and 24, organized by the Unified Workers' Central (Central Única dos Trabalhadores/CUT). The B20 event, scheduled for July 25, will focus on climate change, energy transition, and the implications of artificial intelligence.
Several events and programs will be streamed live on the G20 Brasil website. Stay tuned for updates!
