A truck driver who plunged more than 20 metres off a bridge in Malmsbury this morning is lucky to be alive after the trucks cabin was crushed by its trailer.
Officers have been told the semi-truck and trailer was travelling north bound on the Calder Freeway when it veered from the road and struck a safety barrier and concrete pillar at the Spring Creek Bridge about 5.20am.
The rig then plunged off the bridge between the north and south bound lanes crushing the cabin.
An image of the truck and crushed cabin is below.
The driver, a 36-year-old man, and sole occupant of the vehicle was trapped for over two hours before being freed.
He has been airlifted to hospital with what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
The north bound lanes of the Calder Freeway are expected to be blocked all day while heavy haulage equipment is used to salvage the truck and our partner agencies rehabilitate the scene.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or anyone with dash cam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
