Mirella Fejo has been elected as the new City of Darwin Councillor for the Waters Ward following a Council vote and decision.
The appointment comes following Brian O'Gallagher's resignation to take up the role of Member for Karama, creating a casual vacancy for an Elected Member on the Council.
City of Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis welcomed Ms. Fejo to Council.
"Running for Council provides members of the public the opportunity to be the voice of change in their community," Mr Vatskalis said.
"As Councillor of the Waters Ward, Ms. Fejo will have the opportunity to use her vision to shape the future of her local suburbs and the Darwin municipality, ensuring the needs and aspirations of residents are heard and acted upon," he added.
Ms. Fejo has extensive skills in leadership, strategic thinking and community engagement.
As a Waters Ward resident with executive corporate experience, Ms. Fejo is committed to ensuring Darwin remains a vibrant, multicultural city where everyone feels culturally safe and included.
In December 2024, City of Darwin released an expression of interest for the Councillor for Waters Ward, calling on applications from members of the public.
The vacancy was required to be filled in accordance with the Local Government Act 2019 (the Act) and Council's Policy - Filling Casual Vacancies. Council invited applications from electors who are eligible under Section 46 of the Act.
Ms Fejo will be formally inducted to Council later in February and will officially commence her role and duties after this time.
