Misuse Of Data Investigation Continues

Stats NZ's investigation into the alleged misuse of census forms and data is continuing.

Stats NZ Chief Executive and Government Statistician Mark Sowden appointed independent investigator Doug Craig of RDC Group to lead the investigation after the allegations were received on 29 May 2024.

Originally expected to conclude on 31 July 2024, Mr Craig advised in late July that more time was required to complete the complex investigation.

"The seriousness of these allegations is such that there are multiple agencies investigating. It is important that those involved have the time needed to ensure the matters are thoroughly worked through," says Sowden.

"It's vital the people of New Zealand can trust that when they provide their information to us it is held securely and is only used for the authorised purposes. That is why we are taking these allegations so seriously," says Sowden.

The findings from the Stats NZ investigation will be shared with the Police and Public Service Commission. The findings will also be released publicly with the timing still to be determined.
