Stats NZ's investigation into the allegations of misuse of census forms and data collected by Manurewa Marae continues.
Stats NZ Chief Executive and Government Statistician Mark Sowden appointed independent investigator Doug Craig to lead the investigation after the allegations were received by the Office of the Chief Executive on 29 May 2024.
Originally due to be concluded on 31 July 2024, the timeframe for the investigation has been extended.
The investigation team is now working through the natural justice process which allows those who have been interviewed to check the facts documented in the report.
Doug Craig's report will be publicly released, alongside the Public Service Commission inquiry by Mike Heron and Pania Gray. The timing of that is yet to be confirmed.
"Like the rest of New Zealand, we're very concerned about these allegations," says Government Statistician and Stats NZ Chief Executive Mark Sowden.
"We understand the public want to know the outcome of the investigation - they have the right to and they will," says Sowden.
"It is vitally important too, that we take the time to ensure the investigations are done thoroughly and follow the right processes before they are released."
Further statements will be made on release of the reports.
