The Mitchell Community Steps Towards Change walk will be held in Wallan on Thursday 5 December as part of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign.
16 Days of Activism is an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls that runs from Monday 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to Tuesday 10 December, Human Rights Day.
Council partners with local organisations across Mitchell, Murrindindi and Strathbogie Shire each year through the Lower Hume Collaborative Group to support the campaign.
The walk begins at 10am at Hadfield Park with a Welcome to Country and opening speeches from a range of people, including Tarang Chawla.
Tarang Chawla is a speaker, writer and former lawyer who serves as Commissioner at the Victorian Multicultural Commission and is the co-founder of Not One More Niki, a grassroots non-profit working to end men's violence against women named in memory of his younger sister, Nikita, who was murdered by her partner in 2015.
Tarang is also a sessional academic at Monash University. He wrote, produced and hosted the first two seasons of the acclaimed podcast There's No Place Like Home, and advised both state and federal governments on family violence reform and effectively engaging men in gender equality.
The 1km walk through Hadfield Park and Zonta Club of Mitchell yarn bombing and surrounding block concludes at 1pm with a community event, including local support service stalls, a BBQ and performances from local artists, Eve Simner and Tahlee Christie.
Everyone is welcome, and attendees are encouraged to bring friends, family, and pets while wearing orange attire, if you can.
